Martha McCrorey Thorn papers, 1879-1996, (bulk, 1887-1895).

Diary, 9 Feb-7 Sept 1887, describes student life at Columbia Female College, buildings and grounds, comments on her studies, classmates, and faculty, particularly the Rev. Dr. Osgood Andrew Darby, president of the college; leisure activities represented include church services, temperance lectures, opera house entertainments, meetings of the Wightman Literary Society, strolls through Columbia, S.C.; including a visit to the State House, 8 April 1887, to visit grave of her [great] Grandfather, Swanson Lunsford. Other entries describe her dorm room, 30 May 1887; note her support, 23 May 1887, for "Woman's rights"; and discuss encounters with male students from the University of South Carolina, including a student picnic, 7 May 1887, at the Childs plantation six miles below Columbia. Thorn's later papers consist of letters to and from a large circle of cousins, friends, and suitors; early letters date from her school days and relate to people and activities mentioned in the diary; later items relate to her career as a schoolteacher; an extended visit to her sister in Texas; attempts to apply to medical school; efforts to obtain a clerk's appointment at the 1895 South Carolina constitutional convention; and her sudden death at age twenty-six at Van Wyck, S.C. Letters from Fitzhugh Banks, a Presbyterian clergyman from South Carolna, compose the largest part of the collection and describe his life as a young pastor in Louisiana and Mississippi, his attendance at church meetings, and his 1893 visit to the Chicago world's fair; her other connections included members of the Doty, Thompson, Harrison, Beaty, Rast, Connor, and Brice families. Also includes undated cabinet photograph of Martha Thorn, a studio portrait by the firm of Hennies of Columbia, S.C.
